Did you know just one inch of rain on 1000 square feet of rooftop produces 600 gallons of usable water?! This month, join Team Lightning, Urban Green Lab and the Cumberland River Compact to learn about how to save water and money this spring! We'll cover the benefits of collecting rain water and will finish the workshop with a hands-on demonstration of how to make your own rain barrel, giving you the option to take one home with you for just $40! This workshop is part of Team Lightning's Engage Green Sustainability Workshop Series, which will cover a new sustainability topic each month. Be on the lookout as more workshops continue to be posted on our calendar in the coming weeks and months!

During this workshop, we'll listen to a presentation from representatives with the Cumberland River Compact. Their presentation will include demos on how water pollution can spread throughout local watersheds, as well as an informational overview on how rain barrels work and the benefits that they provide for those who use them. The workshop will conclude with a hands-on demonstration of how to make and use a rain barrel, and will provide the opportunity for participants to take home their own rain barrel for $40.

The Cumberland River winds for over 696 miles through Kentucky and Tennessee. The land through which it flows is home to some of the greatest biodiversity in the United States. Its course touches 40 counties in Tennessee and 32 in Kentucky, with a combined population of more than 2,000,000. Many of the same water resource problems that plague other regions (need for plentiful water, streambank erosion, sedimentation, nutrients and pathogens) have a foothold here. We work throughout the 18,000 square miles of the Cumberland River Basin to address those problems.

The Cumberland River Compact works to protect the Cumberland River and its tributaries through the education of local residents about its importance and through advocating for policies that will benefit the river and surrounding waterways. The Compact does this through its Adopt A Stream program, which Team Lightning participates in, as well as through annual events such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Catfish Rodeo.

Engage Green is an initiative of Team Lightning designed to educate the Nashville community about simple ways to make their lives greener. Engage Green hosts a knowledgeable speaker every month to cover information on how-to topics that can be easily transferred into our daily lives in an informal, casual setting. Each presentation is interactive and allows for discussion throughout. Topics will vary month-to-month, and will be designed to cover a range of sustainbility-related topics. Each workshop is free and includes a one-hour presentation or demonstration with opportunities for questions/answers and engaging with other participants. No reservations needed. Open to the public. Locations may vary.

Urban Green Lab is Nashville's first hub for sustainable living. The non-profit group offers hands-on educational workshops that focus on sustainable living practices such as urban gardening, home weatherization, energy efficiency and water conservation. This first-of-its-kind-in-Nashville organization is designed to "bridge the gap" between thinking and doing and, in the process, move sustainability from concept to daily reality for an increasing number of citizens.

Urban Green Lab is Team Lightning's official Engage Green Workshop Series partner and workshop co-host. They have been instrumental in providing expertise and guidance on a range of sustainability topics, and play a key role in connecting Nashville residents with information on local sustainability issues.
