In 1985, Young Leaders Council (YLC) was created by the Council of Community Services, the HCA Foundation and the United Way to address the need to broaden and strengthen Nashville's volunteer leadership base. By training men and women between the ages of 25 to 39 years to effectively participate on the boards of nonprofit organizations, tomorrow\'s leaders could make a difference in the community today. Participants in the YLC training program come from diverse corporate, civic, and volunteer backgrounds. Not only does Young Leaders Council empower these young professionals with fundamental board skills, nonprofit organizations benefit from a fresh leadership base with knowledge and resources they would not ordinarily have access to. To graduate from the training program, a YLC class participant must attend ten weekly workshops, followed by a one-year internship on a nonprofit board of their choosing. In the twenty years since its founding, more than 1,000 YLC graduates have served on the boards of nearly 150 nonprofit agencies in the Nashville area.
